Rocky Mountain Excavating, Inc. was the prime contractor for this roadway paving project. This project was one of many projects awarded to RME through the Front Range Paving IDIQ. The project scope of work was to roto-mill and overlay 6 miles of asphalt on 4 different roadways on Buckley AFB. Multiple full depth repairs which included excavation and removal of existing subgrade to 12”, placement and compaction of road base material. There was also concrete curb & gutter removal and replacement at various locations. During the milling at one location, it was discovered that the existing asphalt thickness was less than expected and there were more areas that the subgrade needed to be repaired. RME worked with government representatives to keep the construction going while a solution was worked out keeping interruptions to base operations and additional costs at a minimum. This was on a road that there was no option of a detour and there were facilities that access could not be shut down.
Working on an active base, project coordination was imperative to the success of the project, including lane closures, detours, after hour and weekend work to minimize impact to the base operations. This project was completed 2 months ahead of schedule.
