Rocky Mountain Excavating, Inc. was the prime contractor for this parking lot reconstruction project. This project was one of many projects awarded to RME through the Front Range Paving IDIQ. The project consisted of the removal of the existing asphalt, hauling the material to the on-base recycling yard, excavating for new government furnished recycled concrete road base, processing subgrade materials, grading for drainage, installing new asphalt paving, signs, striping, and the restabilization of disturbed areas. The project also included adding concrete curb and gutter at an existing landscape area, replacing the railing at the stairs between the parking lots, installing a new gate opener loop, and replacing the parking blocks after striping. Difficulties presented by this project included the phasing due to bonafide need, maintaining parking lot accessibility for active buildings, and winter weather conditions. Just before completion of the project, as RME placed and compacted the concrete road base, Colorado experienced rain nearly every day for a month straight. RME was able to protect the integrity of the road base by covering areas with plastics and diverting downspouts in order to pave once we were able to find good weather for a few days.
